Happy New Year!
We welcome you back into this new decade and hope you have had a restful break.
This term we are going to be looking at 'Out of this World', this topic will encompass the colder, polar regions of our planet as well as space and looking at beyond our planet.
This week we have been beginning to look at the fantastic story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' the children have retold the story and we have begun to add a twist onto the story by rewriting our version called 'We're Going on a Polar Bear Hunt'. We have been looking at how the different settings can be altered to contain a cold, winter, Arctic theme. Today the children went on a Polar Bear Hunt aroun the school, whilst reading the story out.loud.
In Maths we are learning about 2D shapes and the children have been using full sentences to describe their properties. 'I know its a square because......
Our PE is now on a Monday and we are beginning a unit on ball skills, the children will be learning all about controlling, passing, throwing and cataching balls.
We have moved from the Polar regions to beginning to explore space.
This past week we have been exploring Space alongside the story 'Aliens Love Underpants'. The children have loved creating their own aliens with playdough and describing them to a partner, creating a list of items they could take to space, sequencing he story, using papier mache to create a moon for our display with craters and choosing their very own alien to describe.
In Maths we have moved on from 2D and 3D shapes and have begun to look at money, which has involved us creating a shop, singing 'hot cross buns' (and acting it out), counting pennies and creating price tags for items in our role play 'Ice cream shop' which the children chose to have as our classroom role play area.
We have also finished our week exploring different mixtures, with what happens when different subtances and materials are combined such as cornflour and water (gloop), flour and oil (moon sand) and butter and sugar which led to baking our very own star biscuits to celebrate starting our learning about space. The children wanted to decorate their biscuits whcih we agreed was a fantastic idea, they were fascinated by how much icing sugar was needed but only a tiny amout of water and food colouring.
